At Shrewsbury, we are passionate about the serious fun of learning
Academic curriculum
Our academic approach is designed to cultivate intellectually curious adults who are not only equipped with critical and creative thinking abilities but also possess the confidence to question, challenge and innovate. We emphasise the development of the attitudes, skills, habits and behaviours needed to flourish in the classroom and then to thrive in the life beyond school. At Shrewsbury India, learning is an inspiring journey that goes beyond knowledge, and aims to shape the leaders of tomorrow.
We offer a broad and balanced curriculum which combines depth with choice so that every interest is catered for. We have adopted Cambridge International Education’s programmes of study as our academic curriculum.

Cambridge Lower Secondary Programme
During the lower secondary years, there is a dual focus on building a strong academic foundation in core areas, whilst also offering the opportunity experience of a broad range of other subjects.
This ensures that the pupils are able to make well informed decisions about the subjects that they continue to study at IGCSE in grades 9 and 10, and have the skillsets in place to excel in those studies.
We have chosen to use the Cambridge International Education’s Lower Secondary Programme because it provides the breadth and flexibility to select from available options. Our junior pupils study the following subjects:
- Art and Design
- Computing and Digital Literacy
- English
- Global Perspectives
- Humanities
- Mathematics
- Modern Foreign Languages
- Music
- Physical Education
- Science
- Wellbeing
In addition to the formal Lower Secondary Programme, the pupils at Shrewsbury India will also be introduced to the other subjects that are offered during IGCSEs (Grades 9 and 10) and International Advanced Levels (Grades 11 and 12):
- Business
- Design and Technology
- Drama
- Economics
- Geography
- History
- Psychology
- Sociology
Cambridge IGCSE Programme
The International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) is held in high academic regard across the world. IGCSEs are awarded in individual subjects. The syllabus for each IGCSE subject is designed to be completed over two academic years.
Pupils at Shrewsbury India take between six and nine subjects for their IGCSEs. The number that each pupil takes is decided in consultation with them and their families. Many factors are considered but the central ambition is to ensure that each pupil maintains a balanced academic profile and the foundation to support their future academic development.

Cambridge International Advanced Levels
International Advanced Levels, IA-Levels, are one of the most respected secondary school qualifications in the world. Renowned for their academic rigour, IA-Levels provide an excellent foundation for higher education. These qualifications offer pupils the opportunity to delve deeply into their chosen subjects, fostering advanced critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Emphasising independent learning, they equip pupils with the skills necessary to excel in university studies and beyond.
Our recommendation is that pupils choose three IA-Level subjects. This allows them to focus on subjects that interest them the most.
Studying three subjects at Advanced Levels is sufficient for most undergraduate courses. While a fourth subject may be considered, it should only be pursued if top grades are achieved in the additional subject, without compromising performance in the primary three.
Choosing the right combination of subjects is crucial and should align with the expectations for the pupil’s target undergraduate programmes. To support this decision-making process, our dedicated Futures Department provides guidance and advice to both pupils and their families.
Pupils can choose from a wide range of subjects offered, ensuring that their selection aligns with their academic and career aspirations.
